Basix Skin Care – Natural skin repair products

Basix Skin Care – Natural skin repair products

If you have ever been confused about finding skincare products that best suit your skin-type, then you are not alone. With the thousands of products available in the market today, most of us are left with little choice but to keep trying new products or trust a handful of brands.

Whilst I was searching for skincare product brands with great products to feature in the magazine for the benefit of the readers, I stumbled upon Basix Skin Care – a South African natural skincare company. Upon discussions, they suggested that I should try out their product range and subsequently write an honest review.

My first reaction was, Oh no! I was even more reluctant when I received a delivery of the products and read the brochure and indications at the back of the containers. My initial thought was that these products were for medical skin care treatments and irrelevant to me, but boy oh boy was I wrong!

One night after my usual bath, I decided to try out the first product – the Basix skin repair cream + Kigelia Africana and applied it as a moisturising cream. My whole outlook about the products was completely altered soon afterwards. It has become my ultimate favourite skincare routine product. The citrus scent of the cream is quite refreshing and soothing to the skin.

The Kigelia Africana has smoothened the roughness of my skin and has helped to deal with the slight breakouts that I usually have just before my menstrual cycle. It has also helped to relieve the itchiness from acne. When my skin breaks out, I immediately apply a bit of the cream in the affected area/s and it provides relief from the skin discomfort and itchiness almost immediately. I’ve also noticed that the cream helps to clear the skin after approximately two to three days.

It is a light, creamy lotion that can be worn alone (if your skin is normal to oily) or layered under other moisturizers or oils (if your skin is dry). It’s easily spreadable and sinks in fast for a soft, smooth finish. It felt like a hydrating natural moisturizer spiked with ingredients to brighten my skin tone. The first week of application, I started seeing and feeling the difference on my skin. After two weeks of application, people started noticing and complimented me about my complexion. It is a great product, affordable and has a light, creamy texture and smells good. I have squeezed all the cream out of the container and look forward to using it in the future for many other skin care treatments that the product offers. It works wonders!

Macadamia Oil

The Basix skin repair cream + Macadamia Oil is another great option to deal with itchiness of the skin. I personally tried it out with mosquito bites, and I found it to be a huge relief from the burning and the itchy sensations.  I quickly fell in love with the product after discovering what it could do. It has a thick creamy texture than the Kigelia Africana and it is also an affordable product with good aroma.

Foot Food

The Basix Foot Food + Peppermint Oil is a product that really works like magic with cracked heels. As a jogger, this has helped to relieve pain on my feet that I would experience at times after an intense run. After a few applications, I could feel and see the difference. It has a thick, soft, ointment texture that melts on contact. Your skin consumes it right up as you massage it around. Anyone who tolerates oils well could use this, and it’s particularly ideal for sensitive skin. It has a soothing sensation that penetrates the pores and has an intense minty therapeutic fragrance. It’s quite thick, so you only need a tiny bit; then it spreads beautifully into a nourishing, protective layer. This product is really amazing!

How two wild plants launched a lucrative cosmetics business

How two wild plants launched a lucrative cosmetics business

The rosehip and the cactus are wild plants that many dismiss as valueless. However, Mampho Tjabane, Florratt Cosmetics Founder and CEO, found ‘gold’ in them. In 2014, she turned the rosehip and cactus plants into a thriving business to date. The rosehip, known as “morobei” and the cactus, as “torofeie” in Lesotho have provided the raw materials for a flourishing international cosmetics business.

Mampho Tjabane

Mampho, an Electrical Engineer by profession says when she started her business five years ago, all she looked for was something special and unique to separate her from her competitors. She turned to two local plants that have often been regarded as insignificant and made something meaningful out of it. The plants grow abundantly in the Lesotho Mountains.

“Through careful study and experience, I realised that the rosehip oil can have a soothing effect on human skin, so I began experimenting and using the product to produce capsules for the skin and hair improvement. I also began mixing the rosehip oil with other oils extracted from other indigenous plants to make tissue oil for stretch marks, blemishes, scars to improve skin moisture levels as well as reducing wrinkles and fine lines. The rosehip oils have also been used to make lip balms. We also use extracts from the cactus to produce body creams and glycerines. Other products are made from aloe extracts,” says Mampho.

She says all their materials are harvested in Lesotho and they create employment for many families in the Mountain Kingdom. Mampho also indicates that, ‘according to experts, the rosehip oil offers several benefits when applied externally due to its primary constituents such as essential fatty acids, vitamin E, vitamin C and B-carotene, a form of vitamin A. It also has the anti-aging characteristics due to the antioxidants and the oil’s ability to penetrate deeper layers of skin. The vitamin C antioxidants stimulate collagen production. It also helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles.’

Vitamin A improves the skin’s moisture levels and reduces wrinkles and fine lines. Ultra Violet rays of the sun damage the skin and cause ageing. This results in wrinkles and discoloration. However, the combination of properties in rosehip oil seems to combat the damage. The antioxidants and vitamin A, combined with the oil’s essential fatty acids, help improve skin tone, texture and pigmentation. The cactus helps to improve the skin, hair and facial appearance, according to the biochemical experts. It was based on this research that Mampho launched Florratt Cosmetics.

“I started operating the business from my home in Maseru East in 2014. Today, Florratt has grown in leaps and bounds. We now have Distributors and Consultants in all of Lesotho’s 10 districts as well as in all 9 Provinces in South Africa. The demand for our products has aided the opening of a second factory in Johannesburg, South Africa, where I’m based,” she says.

Florratt Cosmetics currently employs more than 10 full time workers in that factory. Mampho says the company is a centre of excellence in the production of high quality natural cosmetic products that meet customers’ needs. The mission of the company is to create results-oriented natural and scientifically formulated cosmetic products that give the skin and hair a consistent colour, texture and hydration.

“We have started to rebrand our products to ensure they are sold in tubes. Florratt’s aggressive marketing campaign has resulted to more than 6 000 South Africans and Basotho joining the company to make a living from selling the products. We are also expanding our reach to Distributors in Botswana, Mauritius, India, China, USA and Australia,” says Mampho.
