Thuso Mbedu

Hollywood here she comes! Actress Thuso Mbedu will be playing the role of Cora in Amazon’s new original feature, ‘The Underground Railroad’. Her stellar acting work is widely recognised. She was also recently nominated for an Emmy Award for her role in the telenovela Is’Thunzi, which has been called “one of the most compelling television programmes on South African television.

She expressed her excitement on her Instagram:

“My thumb and neurons are failing me right now so I’ll just do as most South Africans do when this happens: I GOT THE JOB!!!! It was such an amazing process and experience. Like, true story, just prepping to audition for this role made me grow so much. It’s such a blessing and honour to tell this story… Again, words fail me so I’ll stop there for now.”

Directed by Oscar-winner, Barry Jenkins, The Underground Railroad Chronicles follows the young Cora’s journey as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. After escaping her Georgia plantation for the rumoured Underground Railroad, Cora discovers no mere metaphor, but an actual railroad full of engineers and conductors, and a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil.
