On Monday the 6th of May 2019, celebrities and designers flocked to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York for the annual Met Gala, celebrating the newest exhibition, Camp: Notes on Fashion. Celebrities dressed in utterly eccentric aesthetic and looked spectacular on the red carpet.

The Met Gala was a feast of fantastic fashion, epic red-carpet entrances and a plethora of famous faces. From Lady Gaga, Cardi B, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Zendaya, Gigi and Bella Hadid, guests transformed the party’s esteemed venue into a stylish soirée.

The Met’s 2019 costume exhibition is “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay, which defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” Think: over-the-top shapes, theatrical accessories and anything wonderfully eccentric. The trick in finding the best dressed on tonight’s flashy red carpet is honing in on the shiny people who also brought the fashion along with the camp.

What is the Met Gala?

The Costume Institute Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art is the biggest event on the fashion fundraising calendar. Founded by publicist Eleanor Lambert, the benefit was first held in 1948 to encourage donations from New York’s high society. In its modern incarnation, the most famous faces from the realms of fashion, film, music and art come together to raise money for the Met’s Costume Institute and celebrate the grand opening of its latest exhibition. The night is centred on the theme of the new exhibition, with previous themes encompassing everything from Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, to Manus x Machina, Punk: Chaos to Couture and China: Through the Looking Glass. This year’s exhibition theme is Camp: Notes On Fashion.
