It has been said that some ideas are born in the least expected environments. This is true for Bubu’s Tutus, an emerging tutu clothing brand. Bubu’s Tutus is a brand under the company Chez Bubu (Pty) Ltd, a family-owned clothing and accessories business.
The flagship products for the business are tutu outfits for babies and toddlers and the range has since expanded to other items such as baby bloomers, rompers, and tutu outfits for older ages. The brand’s main focus has been on female outfits; however, the business strategy includes expanding into male clothing in the near future. The company supplies South Africa and Zimbabwe and will soon be expanding into Botswana.
One of the founders of the business, Thembelihle Ngulani says that the business was inspired by her 18-month-old daughter, Bubuya. She says for her first birthday, she wanted a certain design for a tutu skirt and only had a few days before her birthday to shop around for it. She struggled immensely to get the design that she wanted, which resulted in buying fabric and making the tutu skirt herself. What helped was that she had some previous exposure to fashion and fabrics from high school and she had a domestic sewing machine that she had received as a gift.
“This gave me a chance to experiment with the tutu, as designing has always been my passion. I got positive feedback on the designs and I got a light bulb moment and was encouraged to try and sell the products, and the business has been growing since then. I design the outfits and make samples myself and the orders are made by professional tailors. I am an Occupational Health and Safety practitioner by profession and I also have business administration knowledge from my Masters Degree in Business Administration of which I graduated whilst pregnant with my baby girl, Bubuya,” says Thembelihle.
They are reacheable via Instagram, Facebook, sales agents, and business to business (B2B) sales. Bubus Tutus are now also available at Takealot.
